George Lesko
was born in Krive Czechoslovakia on February 13, 1891 and
came to New York when he was 15 years old and initially
took work in a tin mill.
Anna Wolf was
born in Rovno, Czechoslovakia on February 18, 1895 and came
to New York in 1906. She attended school in Sandusky, Ohio
and, as was the custom in those days, was put to work as
a house servant in a Jewish home whose owner's took a great
liking to her and acted as her protector.
When Anna Wolf
was 16 years old, she moved to Cleveland and worked as a
waitress in Weber's Restaurant. She and George met at a
dance in the church hall. George, a handsome 19 year old,
was there with another girl, but when he saw Anna, a beautiful
16 year old, he left his original date and later married
Anna Wolf on August 12, 1911 with a large wedding.
They lived in
a two family home on 3647 8th street across from a church.
Their first child was Margaret Marie in 1919, then George
in 1924 and Eleanor in 1930
George was an
extrovert who had many friends and was known for his physical
strength. After working in a tin mill, he branched out into
carpentry and general contracting and built many homes in
the area. He was well thought of and was deeply involved
in church and community affairs becoming one of the founders
of what is now Century Savings and Loan.
The years of
the Great Depression were hard on the Lesko's. While their
home was a happy place, the building trades had collapsed
and George took a job from a friend who was a beer distributor
delivering beer to local taverns. While on the job he died
suddenly in the early morning of June 23, 1939, at age 48.
Anna Lesko, a
sharp, enterprising, and feisty woman did a wonderful job
in keeping the family together. She had a beautiful singing
voice and was a great cook. Often the house was filled with
music and heavenly smells from the kitchen.
